The journal for 1764 is a narrative by Dr. John Morgan, surgeon general in the Revolutionary Army in 1776, of his tour from Rome to London in 1764, with details on important persons he met, his visit to Voltaire, universities and academies of learning, palaces, cities, travel, and social life in Europe. Journal of 1781-1784 contains Dr. Morgan's accounts of his professional activities, services rendered and medical supplies sold to his patients, with data on eighteenth-century pharmacology. This volume includes a list of members of the American Philosophical Society.

Benjamin Franklin founded the American Philosophical Society in 1743 in Philadelphia, patterning it after the Royal Society of London. It's purpose was the promotion of the study of science and the practical arts of agriculture, engineering trades, and manufactures.
